Mulled Wine (Glühwein)

Mulled wine with Herbs and Spices, the ultimate Christmas beverage! Mulled wine,
or glühwein as the Germans call it, is warm red wine infused with spices and
flavored with orange.

It is traditionally consumed throughout the winter and especially during Christmas.
It is usually sold mainly at Christmas outdoor markets and squares in central and northern Europe.
With this wonderful recipe, you will learn to make your own at home!

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of dry red wine
  • 1 cup of water
  • 3/4 cups of sugar, or even better, honey
  • 2 oranges
  • 2 sticks of Natural Life Ceylon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. of Natural Life Cardamon
  • 10 Natural Life Cloves Buds
  • 1 Natural Life Nutmeg
  • 1 stick of vanilla
  • 150 ml aged rum or cognac

Instructions:

First, we cut 1 of the oranges into rings and nail on the cloves.
Squeeze the second orange and strain the juice. Chop the vanilla in the middle, top to bottom.

Heat the water with sugar or honey in a medium-low fire.
Once the mixture is homogenized, add the dry red wine and the rest of the spices.
That is grated cardamom, Ceylon cinnamon sticks, orange rings with pinned cloves,
and vanilla. Finally, rub a nutmeg and pour in the orange juice.

Allow the mixture to warm on medium-low heat, without boiling it for about 15 to 20 minutes.
We do not want to bring it to boil because the alcohol will evaporate.
Then remove the pot of hot wine from the heat and add the aged rum or cognac.

Strain and serve the mulled wine in a hot brandy glass or any other glass we wish,
as long as it is hot so it does not break. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and orange slice or
orange peel but avoid the white flesh of orange so as not to bitter our wine.

Now enjoy!
